As Timothy Keller wisely noted, true fortitude isn't about avoiding the storm, but how we are shaped within it: "Hardships dynamically transform our internal character if we allow them to push us toward a deeper identity rather than a reliance on our own fleeting strength" (121).   • What to say: “I see how much you’ve been carrying, and it makes complete sense that you are exhausted. It is okay to be tired.”


Offer Presence Over Solutions: When someone is mentally drained, processing a checklist of advice feels like extra work. Sit with them in the quiet.


  • What to say: “You don't have to figure everything out right now. I’m here with you, whatever you need—even if it's just to sit in silence.”


Narrow the Horizon: Exhaustion exaggerates the size of problems. Help them shrink their focus down to the immediate present.


  • What to say: “Let’s pull back the lens. What is just one small thing you have control over right now? Let’s just focus on that today.”
